THANK YOU TO OUR CASINO FUNDRAISER VOLUNTEERS!!!

Science

This week, we moved on from body systems to plants and began learning about plant transportation systems. The plant transport system includes the xylem and the phloem which work together to transport water and nutrients throughout plants. Ask your student to describe how each part of the transport system works (hint: one moves water, and one moves sugars)! We also planted our own seeds and are hopeful we will see some sprouts within the next week. :)

Writing/Health

In writing, we continued on with poetry; this week focusing on metaphors and how they can be used in poetry to create stronger imagery and highlight specific emotions. The students practiced writing metaphors based on the Zones of Regulation and the feelings that they have experienced in the different zones.

Which tied into our health discussions this week that were focused on how students are feeling about next year and how to handle some of the challenges they are anticipating over the summer and into the next school year. Many kiddos are nervous about the older kids at their new school as well as what approach is the best way to solve problems they may have. We discussed at length that using violence is not the best way to handle problems, and most importantly to be aware of not putting yourself into situations where you are going to be unsafe. Here is a great in to chat with your students about how they are feeling about next year. 😎

Math

During our work with fractions this week, we began focusing on the composition and decomposition of fractions. You can work on your skills at home by adding and subtracting fractions with common denominators.

We also continued working on algebraic equations! Students have been practicing using their understanding of addition and subtraction operations to solve problems with variables. Next week we are going to work more on multiplication and division equations, bringing in the term coeffecient!

Social Studies
These kids are pros on ancient civilizations! This week we covered taxation, alongside some great discussions about our current taxation format and what our tax dollars go to right now. We also spent time learning about the rise and FALL of ancient civilizations and students made up their own comprehension questions about what they had read and discussed.

Gym
A great week playing Boomcity, a throwing, catching, hand-eye coordination, team work phenomena and evolution warm-up game!

Buddies!
The grade 5s cooked at being good role models this Friday, showing their buddies how to use and code our Dash Robots. Ms. Sera and Mrs. Barnden were very proud to see nearly every student demonstrate good role model skills with their grade 2 pals.

And we had a wonderful performance from one of the Nosecreek Bands and Choir! It was a lovely experience and a great opportunity for the kiddos to see what possibilities await them at their next schools!
