First Week of School!
**Please make sure you have gone through the Demographic and Annual Authorization forms on your MyCBE Parent Account and update your preferences for consent to post and publish! We have many pictures that we would love to post to keep all of you updated on the amazing things that we are doing in our classroom!!

INFERENCING Bag Activity 💜
As a way to help our students learn more about each other as well practice their inferencing skills, we have sent home paper bags (for those who wish to participate) for students to collect 3-5 items that represent parts of themselves. Students will share their items with their peers, and their peers will in turn make inferences about the items. An example would be Ms. Sera brought in a golfball that is pink, students were able to inference that she loves to golf, and also likes the color pink. Student items will be returned when your students have had the opportunity to share them with their classmates!

Writing
We read the book Where Oliver Fits, about a puzzle piece who tries to change himself to fit in and then realizes that embracing his unique qualities are what makes him so special. The students then reflected on this book and started off the year by writing paragraphs about what makes them a unique piece of our classroom community. We were impressed by how much the students remembered from last year about how to write a strong paragraph and loved learning more about them through their writing!
Math
We started off our year with some fun review activities! We will be doing short number concept warm-up activities each day and we started with Target - where students are given a number and they have 3-5 minutes to record as many number sentences that equal the target number as they can. After the timer goes we share them as a class and review! We will also be doing daily basic facts at each students level - we started these this week too! The students cooked at them!
Of course, we found some time to play some cool math games as well. Students played Junk it also known as trash as well as Nifty-Fifty - ask them to teach you how to play!
Art
These kids are artists! We jumped right back into art this week working on self-portraits, name tags and a water color fish that represents our students unique personalities 😎. Ms. Sera and Mrs. Barnden were wowed by everyone's amazing artist views and talents.
Literacy Stations
We will be working on literacy stations throughout the school year. This is a time for students to independently practice their reading and writing skills, while Mrs. Barnden and Ms. Sera provide small group reading and word work instruction at each student's specific literacy level.
We introduced our Book Making station. This is a station where students will be writing their own books based on topics of their choosing. They can write non-fiction or fiction books, chapter books, picture books, or graphic novels. The students did an amazing job of brainstorming ideas for their first books. Ask your child what their first book will be!
Get Know You and Community BuildingTasks
We love community and feeling connected to our classmates, teachers and school! We have been very explicitly working on building a strong sense of classroom community through collaborative and cooperative games! We have played shipwrecked where students needed to exercise their communication, gross-motor and team work skills, a few different cooperative games and relays that supported students in further working together as teammates. As well as a number game that showed students what good math communication feels like and looks like. Shout out to Izzy for teaching our class how to play Tatanka, Tatanka, as Indigenous game she learned from the previous grade 5 students!
We also discussed what makes a great classmate by having students brainstorm ideas to share on our class anchor chart that will be turned into our classroom expectations list. Later in the week we broke down our student code of conduct by coming up with the I can statementsvfor Respectful, Safety, Welcoming and Caring!
