Highlight from the week for the students:

My highlight of the week was getting to share all of the things that I brought from home and listening to other people share (inference bags) - Ava

My favorite thing this week was the math magic squares and all the other things we did in math - Hiaan

My favorite thing was reading Fatty Legs and learning about all the Indigenous parts - Sophia

My favorite thing was gym, math and going home - Efe

My favorite thing was also going home and I also liked gym. My favorite part of this week was doing inferencing - Izzy

Thank you, thank you, thank you for sending us a wonderful, kind, thoughtful, amazing bunch of kiddos to work with each day. We are truly grateful to be your student's teachers this year and are looking forward to all of the great things we will be accomplishing. 💜

Each September, students at Northern Lights School will join thousands of schools worldwide in the annual Terry Fox Event.  In preparation for the event, students reflect on topics such as Terry Fox’s legacy, meeting challenges, empathy, and setting personal goals. You may wish to support your child’s learning about Terry Fox through discussion at home. Further information can be found at https://terryfox.org/.

Our goal is to run or walk 1900 kms as a school as well as raise $1900

Students and families are invited to donate to the Terry Fox Foundation in the following ways: by contributing cash or cheques, made payable to The Terry Fox Foundation, to classroom collection boxes; or online. Online donations may be made at: https://schools.terryfox.ca/137827 . Tax receipts will be issued by the Terry Fox Foundation for donations over $20.00.  All monies raised through our event will be forwarded to the Foundation to further the cause of cancer research.  The deadline for donation is Friday, September 18, 2026.

Read Aloud - Mini Novel Study

In recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in September, students have started a mini novel study of Fatty Legs by Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margaret Pokiak-Fenton. We are currently reading this book as our class read aloud, and through this meaningful text, students will learn about the experiences of residential school and deepen their understanding of Truth and Reconciliation. We have also connected our learning to writing by having students respond to the text in their writing journals. As we continue on with the novel, students will reflect on important events, share their thoughts, feelings, and opinions on what has occurred in the book, and make predictions throughout, as they develop their understanding of the story. Our 5A students have been so engaged in the reading so far, and the discussions they've had in small groups, as well as whole class conversations, have been wonderful!

                          

Math

In math with Ms. Sera, we will be starting our year with a focus on place value. Students will work with whole numbers up to 10 000 000 as well as decimals to the thousandths place. This week, students reviewed their Grade 4 understanding of place value and have started an engaging “All About Me” number task. They are using numbers that represent different aspects of themselves and turning them into mathematical statements, for example, “I have 9 + 4 letters in my first and last name.” This activity allows students to connect math to their own lives while strengthening their understanding of place value, number relationships, and mathematical reasoning. We also worked on a math activity called Magic Squares, which we used as a warm up to our lessons but will later incorporate into math stations!

In math with Mrs. Barnden, we will be focusing on number review warm-ups to connect and support the work that Ms. Sera does earlier in the week, and then moving into Coordinate Geometry!   

                                                      

Health

In health this week, we started our kid of the day routine! We choose a different student each day and they receive compliments from their peers, teacher and give themselves a compliment as well. We also explored the zones of regulation and reviewed some of the vocabulary by playing a version of charades that allows talking, drawing, and acting out. Students described words such as regulate, red zone and perspective.

Students also did their inference bags! This was really fun and cool to learn more about each other and develop a greater understanding of each other's differences and similarities. It is also helping us build our abilities to respect each other's differences!

Literacy Stations

Did you know your kids are authors? They have been making books, developing their expertise on chosen topics during expert station, building their vocabulary through words of the week and practicing their letter writing skills! Ask your student what their favorite station they have done so far is!
