Sept 22-26

Grade 5s are dapping it up this week!

Quick Note: Thank you so much to all of the families, including big sisters πŸ˜ƒ, who were able to make it to the Open House. It was really nice to meet all of you and have your students share what they are finding special about school right now. If you weren't able to make it, that's okay! We will see you soon too!

Important dates:

September 29: No school (Professional Development day)

September 30: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Oct 2: Picture day!

Oct 13: No school, Thanksgiving

Oct 15 & 16: Walk for Wenjack
Oct 16: Edo Fun lunch

From the kids

I asked everyone to write what they wanted to share on the blog on a sticky note! I also said that 'nothing' was not an acceptable response...

Shout outs to Chase and Dan who very creatively wrote "something" and "everything" 😎. They also shared that they wanted to include Coordinate Geometry as well as Friends and origami (students have the chance to do this during mindfulness)

We played Boom city. Its where there are two teams and you can throw and catch. If you want to catch you go to the other teams bench. To throw you stay on your side. If you catch a normal ball you get 1 flag. If you catch a special item you get 3 flags. - Evaya

We went outside and tied ribbons on the fence with our grade 2 buddies for orange shirt day - Cynthia, Mazneen, Lizzie, Kaitlyn, CZ, and Tobi

We also learned about Residential School and Orange Shirt day, as well as read the timeline of Residential schools with our buddies - Lilly, Ahmed, and Jordan

GYM! We played Gagaball, Boom city, Freedom Frenzy - Kixton, VB, Ted

MATH! We learned about coordinate planes, played a little battleship and work - Arsh and Zack

Our words of the week - Clinton

Our kid of the days - Evie and Jennifer  (This will be for another week πŸ’œ)

My drawings - Emma (she asked me to the post this one)

It was a very busy week! First off, we had a presentation from Youthlink, part of Calgary Police Services, to discuss cyber safety. Students were able to learned how to create safer user names and to follow safer practices when engaging in social media. Most of our students have some form of social media and many of them did not know that they should not be sharing where they live or their full names online.

We also took time to deepen our understanding of Orange shirt day and our own understanding of acts of Reconciliation. Students listened to stories of survivors of Residential schools as well as explored the Orange shirt day website. We also reflected on how students should feel at school and will be creating a collaborate art piece to hang in our classroom for the year as a reminder of our commitment to Reconciliation.

Ms. Sera and I are looking forward to great October with 5C!
