September 15 - 19

We had another very busy week in 5C!

We wanted to start off by sharing that next week is our week of learning about Truth and Reconciliation with Orange Shirt Day on Friday, September 26.

September 30th is a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation meant to commemorate the history and legacy of Residential Schools in Canada. On Friday, September 26th, students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt or something else with orange to recognize Orange Shirt Day and the National Truth and Reconciliation Day.

Students will be engaging in learning next week to honor this important day. Through read alouds and activities, students will focus on understanding what they each need to feel safe and cared for at school and to consider this question: “What action can each member of our school community do to make sure every student feels safe and cared for at school, everyday?” This week is an opportunity for Northern Lights students and staff to come together in the spirit of reconciliation to show their support of a safe, respectful and caring school community.

Make sure you read our blog posts next week to learn more about the activities and learning students are doing in our classroom.

Here's what students had to say about their week!:

We worked a bit more on our slideshows for literacy stations! – JK

- On Tuesday we met our new buddies and we went to Ms. Penonzek's class! – EJ

- In gym, before the Terry Fox run, we played some dodge ball games which were a bit violent but it wasn’t major and everyone did a fabulous job in the Terry Fox run! – KM

 - In music we did poison rhythm! – EJ

- On Tuesday, science went a bit overboard in a fun way with science Jeopardy – weather and climate version! And then today we went outside and used thermometers to check the temperature! – KM

A highlight was getting to meet our new Grade 2 buddies! We are buddied up with Ms. Penonzek's class and had a lot of fun getting to know one another and then working on a Terry Fox task together!

Science was also a hit this week. We are working on Earth Systems and exploring weather and climate! On Friday, we headed outside to test out the first of many weather tools - thermometers. Students have started a weather tracker and measured today's temperature.

Here are some pictures from the Terry Fox Run, as well as taking notes on some new learnings about Terry Fox and his Metis History

Here are some pictures of Math - Battleship

An amazing example of Book making!

We hope you all have a fabulous weekend and enjoy this beautiful weather! 😎
