October 1 - 3!

A short week, but a good week in Grade 5!

Important note:
We hope to see everyone soon! We truly love being your student's teacher. 💜 - We will not have access to email during the strike, but will respond to any messages upon our return to work.
Love, Mrs. Barnden and Ms. Sera

Science
We started research on the climate zones this week. Students will be researching one of the 5 climate zones - Polar, Continental, Tropical, Temperate and Dry and will then create a presentation to highlight their expertise in that area. Options for presentations include, slideshows, posters (either hand drawn or digitally made), or recording an expert video! Ask your student how they plan to share their learning. We are also tracking the current weather of different cities within each climate zone by exploring temperature, humidity, wind, and precipitation.

Math
Students continued on with their basic facts practice. This is something that can continue at home too - using a deck of cards you can play addition, subtraction or multiplication War at home to keep their skills strong! We also learned how to play Nifty Fifty - a game that works on 2 digit addition and subtraction skills as well as mathematical reasoning! The students found this challenging but fun. Please find instructions on how to play here.

We also worked on some challenging Geometry, plotting coordinates in all four quadrants as well as creating a Halloween themed tangram puzzle!

Writing
Students began work on an "Autobiography with a Twist" this week. They used a 4-Square Planner to plot out different aspects of their life - All about me, My first month of school, Connections I have at school, and My future. The autobiography will be organized into paragraphs, and students are working on using topic, supporting and concluding sentences, strong vocabulary, and challenging themselves to include interesting details to really engage their audience! We cannot wait to read them and learn all about the wonderful students in our class :)

In Gym, students learned a new game called Tower of Defence where they worked on their throwing and catching skills.

Here are some other good photos we've taken this year!
