The following highlights are from Mrs. Barnden (we ran out of time to capture more student voice)!

Restart

Restart came this week! Robin and Nate from the Restart Program came for their first of ten sessions to work on developing our students understanding of emotional regulation, communication styles, consent, peer pressure and personal boundaries. This is in addition to our Zones of Proximal development work that we already do! This week, students discussed stereotypes and labels and how judgements can be harmful to our self confidence. If you have any questions about this, please reach out to Mrs. Barnden (Restart comes on Thursdays when Mrs. Barnden is teaching)

Math

We are wrapping up statistics and data collection. We also had buddy time where the grade 5s supported their buddies in recording data for their questions in a frequency tables. After recording the data, students worked together to create a concrete graph and some groups were able to create bar graph and dot plots.  Students also put their math skills to work this week playing some math games once their graphing task was complete. (Special shoutouts to our resident Dino expert and semi-professional photographer Jordan, as well as our class friend Fred)

Fred loves math.

Writing

Students finished their procedural writing piece this week. They had 4 options to choose from:

- How to Build a Snowman

- How to Put on a Band aid

- How to Brush your teeth

- How to make a Sandwich

They used the rubric and checklist to ensure they were including all the necessary parts. Students also shared their work with a peer to edit and revise. We were specifically looking for transition words and proper capitalization and punctuation.

Social Studies
Students enjoyed this week's task of Adapt, Move, Modify! I was jazzed about their ability to define these terms in both ways that make sense to them as well as in relation to Ancient Civilizations! Ask them to share with you their understanding. Here are some photos!

Science
In science this week, we conducted our first experiment related to buoyancy. We followed the scientific method and tested whether or not classroom objects sunk or float. We were able to draw conclusions about what impacted an objects ability to float and discussed that even though an object may be small and light that did not mean that it would float. Here were some surprises from the experiment that the students shared:
  • The pencil sharpener lid sunk, but the bottom floated

  • Surprised how well base 10 blocks and hundred blocks floated, they couldn’t be sunk!

  • Glasses (from Kixton's face) floated when placed in one direction and sunk in another direction

  • Super surprised that a paper clip didn’t float

  • A singular staple immediately sunk (should we follow up with multiple staples all stuck together?)

  • Surprised that paper floated (but after absorbing water it sank)

Gym
This week the students began their unit on basketball!!

And Mazneen shared a very informative presentation on plants, which we all enjoyed!

Fred wishes everyone a good weekend full of reading!
