What a week! Here are some lovely comments from the students:
- In science we did a sink or float experiment with different liquids! - Evie
- We played basketball in gym! - Methara
- During science we got to do a fun experiment we got to see if different objects floated in different liquids (canola oil, salt water, vinegar, corn syrup, soap and tap water). The results were very cool and a stick floated on everything but the corn syrup and a leaf floated in everything but canola oil! - Lizzie
- Today we did Scratch on the computers and got to make cool things and got our characters (or Sprites) to do whatever we wanted and they all turned out great! - Lilly
- I presented an expert station about Chinese New Year! - Clinton
- In social studies we got to write a postcard as if we lived in an ancient civilization! - Lizzie
Our class was cooking this week! - Clinton
We had a great week this week and are getting verrrryyyyy close to wrapping up many of our units.
Science
We conducted another experiment this week as you can see from the student comments above. We tested the buoyancy of 6 different objects in 6 different liquids to answer the question: Do all liquids have the same buoyant force? The students had a lot of fun and made a few surpising discoveries. We learned that liquids do not all have the same buoyant force, and that corn syrup is really, really, really sticky! Haha
Restart
Big Nate (his nickname) and Robin were back this week from Restart!
We talked about the importance of expressing our emotions and figuring out what is the reason we are having them. Students also learned about empathy, sympathy and vulnerability. They got to participate in an interesting activity that involved saran wrapped fidgets, oven mitts, and a lot of patience. This was a great opportunity to discuss what coping strategies can be used when feeling dysregulated. We look forward to welcoming Robin and Nate back next week!
Math
Students worked on creating a closed list data set using classroom materials. Some of the data recorded was how tall a Lego tower or dice tower can be built in 1 minute and how many different color markers or pencil crayons we have in the classroom. Students worked on recording their data and then creating an appropriate graph to show their data. After they were asked to identify the mode and create a comprehension question to go with their graph. We will be wrapping up this unit next week.
Gym
Students continued to work on their basketball skills! Mr. Newton shared with us that he has really enjoyed seeing the kids who have been at NLS since Kindergarten improving so much each year. He had lots of positive compliments to share. π
Social Studies
We also started our final task for Ancient Civilization geography! Students will be creating postcards from an Ancient Civilization. They had the chance to practice using watercolors to create landscapes and the results were amazing. Check out below!
