Math

This week (and last week) in math we started working on multiplication and division. Students have currently been working on 3-digit by 1-digit problems. Like these ones:

We did partner work, and practiced using math talk questions, such as "can you show me what you did...?", "what strategy did you use?",  and "I agree with your answer because...". This is to help students think about the work that they are doing, and to allow for better discussions in the classroom to deepen our understanding of the math that we are practicing. Any extra practice students want to do at home is always helpful as we will be moving into equations that are 3-digit by 2-digit. It is especially helpful to solidify basic facts skills! A strong understanding of basic facts come in very handy when we are solving equations with larger numbers.

Author Visit

On Tuesday, we were lucky enough to have a presentation from a local author - Melissa Allan. She wrote the book Brave like the Buffalo and came to our school to share in a reading of her book and also sang songs with us! All of the NLS students really enjoyed this experience. The lesson learned from the book was

Literacy Stations

We've started working on some new literacy stations this week!

1. Olympics Research: students have been quite excited to learn about the Winter Olympics. Students chose an Olympic Event and are conducting research to learn more about their chosen sport. Topics being researched include - Event Basics, Gear and Equipment, History of the Event, and Famous Athletes. Once research is complete, students will be able to choose how they wish to present their information!

2. Current Events: In this new station, students will be provided with a current event relevant to what is occurring in the world around us. They will read the event, think about the important information pertaining to this event, and reflect on how this event may be impactful on their own life. They will record a paragraph, with topic and concluding sentences to share their learnings.

Restart!

This week, we focused on the power of AI and how Social Media isn't always real life. It was very eye opening for some students that being verified on Instagram or Tiktok does not mean that person is portraying the true versions of themselves. We also talked about easy it is to bypass the age requirements on different apps. This would be a great subject to talk about at home as many of our students are using apps that require them to be 13 or older and using these apps to communicate with people they know and some they don't. Some students also talked about what it would happen if they were to meet up with someone from a social media app.

Art
We also worked on our name identity art sculpture. Students are creating bubble or block letters of their names to be turned into a sculpture. They are including different symbols, words and pictures to express parts of their identity. These kiddos are really good artists!

And you better believe we made it outside as soon as the temperature hit -10 😊

Also happy Pretzel day! Thank you parent council for all that you do!
