Writing

This week we began focusing on opinion writing and started planning our first persuasive piece. We are using a TIDE planner to organize our ideas. TIDE stands for - Topic, Idea, Details, and Ending. Students were given a choice of 3 topics to choose from for this first persuasive piece, ask your student what they will be writing about. As we become more proficient with persuasive writing, we will be combining what we have learned in science about different Energy Resources, to record a multi-paragraph persuasive writing piece to explain which energy resource we think would be the best and why! See an example of the graphic organizer we used this week:

Social Studies
We are working on our next Ancient Civilization task which is a cool research project that will have students deepening their understanding of Innovations, Government and the Social Structures of 4 different Ancient Civilizations. Students will then create a research presentation to share with their peers and teacher.

Art
We are continuing to work on our Identity Name Sculpture. Students are getting to the construction part!

Classroom Community/Health/Social Skills
We have been continuing to work on social skills this week! We talked about inside vs. outside thoughts and reflected on how when we express our inside thoughts it can have a negative impact on others. Students also completed a risk taking activity with Restart. They had to identify their values and then decide if they wanted to risk it to make a basket to get a reward. It was a good experience in recognizing that our choices have consequences.

We also are starting a new practice of acknowledging when students in the classroom do an act of kindness! This week, we want to shout out:

Dan for helping a classmate clean up a chocolate milk spill without being asked.

Chase for volunteering to help a peer with their expert presentation.

Tobi for cleaning up markers that were not her mess without being asked.

It's nice to celebrate all of the amazing things the kiddos are doing!

Math
We worked on Area and Perimeter this week - discussing the formula, completing a challenge with blocks!

We also had 3 students present this week for expert station!  Congratulations Jordan, Lizzie and Methara! You guys are awesome!
