April 20 - 24
Ap 20-23: Wild like the weather!
From the teachers:
Another busy week! There was lots going on in our classroom! We are nearing the end of the year believe it or not. Please check out our important dates above 💜.
Art
This week, in recognition of Earth Day on April 22nd, the students created Earth Day art. Using watercolours and oil pastels, they depicted scenes of nature that they felt were important to care for and protect. Along with their artwork, they recorded paragraphs that explained what they have learned about Earth Day and ways that we can help protect our Earth!
Health
We spent some time this week talking about following instructions and consequences. Students discussed with a partner what can happens when you follow instructions and what can happen when you do not follow them. We also talked about the benefits of whole body listening and following directions right away vs. later. We are working hard to develop a deeper understanding of accountability for our own actions as well as that we can control our own behaviour, but not the behaviour of others.
Math
We started learning about fractions this week with a review and some good discussions about what fractions are and where we see them or use them in real life! The students learned about Improper Fractions and Mixed Fractions and how they are related!
We also continued our work with measurement, looking at squared metres and centimetres (and inadvertently reviewed multiplying by decimal numbers when we measured the area of our classroom). We are practicing estimation using different units of measure as well as converting between them, specifically looking at squared units!
Social Studies
The time is up for our Research Presentations! Students had the opportunity to share their work with several peers, including working in a small group to learn about the other civilizations as well as teach about the one they researched. Working with peers also allowed us to have several conversations about how to be a cooperative and supportive group member as well as review expected behaviour around using technology. Moving forward we will be taking a deeper look at citizenship and how historical events have influenced decision making in society for modern day.
Literacy
In Literacy Stations this week, we started a new station - Free Write. This station will allow students to use all of the writing skills we have used this year, to create their own, unique pieces of writing using topics or genres of their choice. They are working on consistently remembering to use capital letters and punctuation in the correct places, organizing their writing into clear paragraphs, as well as using details to support their ideas and keep their readers engaged!
