From the kids:
The piece of information that students most wanted to share was that they played Snowman dodgeball this week!
They also started playing the ukuleles in music this week.
They completed their multiplication and division show what you know

Science

This week in science we conducted another experiment to answer the question: How is the density of solids related to buoyancy? In this experiment, the students used sliding weight scales to determine the weight, in grams, of density cubes made of different substances. After they had determined weight, they used the formula D=m/v to determine the density of each cube. They then made predictions on whether certain substances would float or sink based on their density.

Math

We wrapped up our multiplication and division unit this week with a Show What You Know! Students really showed a lot of growth during this unit and we encourage them to continue to practice their multiplication and division facts at home (we'll also be doing this at school), to continue to strengthen their automaticity. This leads into a short focus on Order of Operations, where students will need to access their understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division!
We also continued to work on Area and Perimeter, measuring classroom items and applying the formulas to determine and record the area and perimeter. We will be focusing more on units of measure and how to convert between units next week.

Thanks to Methara for her photography skills!

Writing

We are working on our final persuasive writing piece, with a tie into Science. Students are currently writing about which renewable or nonrenewable energy resource they think would be the best choice for Calgary. They need to support their opinion with information that was gathered during the research stage of learning about the different energy resources. We used a TIDE Planner to organize our ideas, before beginning writing our persuasive piece. Ask your student which energy resource they think would be the best!

Social Studies

We are continuing to work on our Ancient Civilizations presentations, hoping to wrap them up and present to peers in the next two weeks. We have been doing lots of revisiting our research to ensure that the information we have found fits into each section, as well as using the tide planner above to support us in writing thoughtful paragraphs with the information we have recorded. We also did a peer share today to check in with our research groups to make sure we are on the right track.
On our google classroom, there are exemplars as well as the checklist and rubrics for students to access and review. Feel free to check them out with your student!

Have a wonderful weekend and we will see you Monday!
