Our Super heroes!

Special Shoutout to this amazing bunch of leadership/creative club kiddos who handmade over 100 masks for our dance attendees! (Missing a few helpers from the photos!) 💜

AND a huge thank you to our small, but mighty parent council for all of the incredible work that went into making our family dance so super!

Ms. Sera & Mrs. Barnden and their families loved seeing everyone!

Art

We took another 'stab' 😄at printmaking! Students were very successful in creating beautiful designs on their matrixes, as well as not injuring themselves during the process! We are looking forward to completing their prints next week.

sharing their wonderful art with Ms. Docherty 😀

Math

This week we have been working on visually representing fractions, with a continued focus on improper fractions and mixed numbers. Students were tasked with pictorially representing improper fractions and then also converting the fraction into a mixed number. This provided a more in-depth understanding of why the improper fraction of 7/4 is equal to 1 and 3/4. Ask your student to explain how to represent fractions in these different ways.

We also started algebra, looking at using letters as variables in equations. We made a connection to perimeter and area with length and width being represented as L and W in the formulas, as well as  explored solving and writing different equations using variables. Next week, we will practice writing word problems to match equations with variables, moving towards applying our knowledge of order of operations to create problems with two or more steps.

Writing

We began focusing on poetry this week. We discussed what poetry is, where we can find poetry in the real world and why people might write poetry. The grade 5s then wrote a variety of different similes to practice using figurative language. Next week they will be writing their own simile poems.

Science & Social Studies

We are learning all about living systems in science right now. We have started off by examining the digestive system. Students were quite surprised at just how complex the digestive system is and all of the different body parts that are involved in order to convert our food to energy. Up next will be a focus on the circulatory system!

We have started our short unit on trade routes - students did research and answered comprehension questions about the topics of the Silk Road, the Trans-Saharan desert and how the routes were both on land and on sea. They also discussed that goods were not the only thing that was shared across civilizations, but ideas, religionous beliefs and innovations as well.

Nutrition Program

We were lucky enough to participate in the Food Impact Nutrition Program and had Chef Sydney come in to teach us and help us prepare pasta salad. The students loved the pasta salad and couldn't get enough of it! We learned about Indigenous connections to food and the land as well as how food can help to bring people together in enjoyment and as a way of sharing.

Gym

This week in gym, Mr. Newton started an intro to volleyball! The students have been working hard on their skills, including setting, bumping, spiking and serving!

Have a wonderful long weekend!
