Some outdoor DPA shots from the week 😎

From the kids:
Today we did printmaking and we did our good copies - Clinton

Our printmaking is finally finished! They look really good - Lizzie

We started working on Algebra - Arsh

This week in gym, we started and finished volleyball games - Evie

This week, we did trading in Social Studies - Vansh

Some people were scamming (including Ted, Zack, Claire, Nhial and Evie, and the number one scammer Vansh: example 7 gold for 1 elephant) - All of us

Being a 'scammer' was actually very appropriate during the trading activity! Ancient Civilizations needed quick thinkers, creative traders and those willing to take a chance to get by! - Mrs. Barnden

We did our screaming race competition and unfortunately Ms. Warkentin's class won! - Mazneen

Writing

This week we read the book, Sometimes I Feel Like and Oak by Danielle Daniel. The book includes twelve short poems that focus on different trees, through the season. In each poem, a child identifies with a certain feature of the tree. We used the poems in the book, as inspiration for our own poetry writing. We used similes and metaphors, as well as through about traits or characteristics that described us, to compare ourselves to something in nature. We will be continuing this work next week, using the book, Sometimes I Feel Like a Fox.

Social Studies

We wrapped up discussing trade routes and trade practices of Ancient civilizations this week! We did a trade simulation where students were grouped into ancient civilizations, created the goods that could be found in there, set out to trade with other civilizations! Some chaos ensued, some sketchy trades 😎, and some good learning! Students were able to consider some of the challenges traders experienced (weather, fatigue, language barrieres) when reflecting after the activity. We will be moving on to look a little deeper at economic practices of ancient civilizations.

Math

We dug into algebra! Students have been practicing using a letter to represent the unknown variable in equations using subtraction and addition operations. Next week, we will be spending more time looking at using variables when working with multiplication and division operations as well.

Here is the question to complete with an adult at home to earn ten minutes of free time! Bring it in completed with your adult's name.

Claire is baking cupcakes. She needs to make 25 cupcakes. She made has made two batches of 6 already. How many more cupcakes does she did?
Write the EQUATION with the variable?
Solve and Check
