Science

We conducted a celery experiment to test how water travels through a plant. We places celery stalks into water that was coloured with food colouring, and observed it over a 48 hour period. After the 48 hours we cut open the celery to see how the coloured water had traveled from the roots to the top of the celery. Students were excited to see the tubes within the celery - the xylem and phloem, and just how much colour they absorbed!

Our plants also started sprouting this week, with some students plants really taking off! We can't wait to see how they look next week :)

Math

This week, we wrapped up our focus on fractions. Students worked on adding and subtracting improper fractions and mixed numbers. We also added in elements of problem solving. We had some of our fraction "experts" share their knowledge with their classmates and everyone was accurately solving the addition and subtraction of fractions!

We also continued on with algebraic equations and multiplication. We learned what a coeffiecent is! 4y = 20, y = ? We also continued practicing solving different equations created by our peers! See if you can solve a few below!

These two LOOOOOOOOOOOVE math.

Writing

We began biography writing this week. Students interviewed someone in the class in order to gather information about their life. They asked questions about family, friends, interests and hobbies,  as well as goals and dreams for the future. Our students will  then use this information to create a biography, putting their writing skills to the test to organize their work into clear paragraphs and to add details and strong vocabulary to add interest to their writing. We are impressed already with the sense of voice that is shining through in their first paragraphs!

Here are some new and some throw-back pictures to show just how far we've come! 😍

We also did some great creative work for Imagination day! Students worked in groups of 4 to create a picture with ten second intervals, they then worked together to tell a short story to accompany their picture. The best part was hearing them laugh and enjoy doing a teamwork activity together.
